How Do You Choose A Quality Telescope Eyepiece On A Budget?

My primary interests are currently in planetary viewing. I have a 5" aperture, 1000mm focal length, Newtonian reflector scope.
I prefer image quality followed by eye relief. I'm interested in 4mm, 6mm,12mm, and 40mm optics. Minimal focusing when switching lenses is also important. I'm looking for eyepieces under $100 each, for now.
What manufacturers/brands, series, and types best meet my needs? Why are they the best for my needs? Also, is the Celestron Accessory kit worth buying?

US $.99

Injanier has already given you an excellent answer, and I agree with all that he has said. In addition to the orthoscopics he recommended, I would recommend Orion Ultrascopics and Tele Vue Plössls. The latter are very reasonably priced and are significantly better quality that the generic Chinese Plössls everyone else sells. The Celestron kit is a waste of money. The eyepieces are all second rate, and the filters not much use. Instead get a couple of good quality eyepieces and you’ll be a lot happier. With your scope, I’d recommend something around 5 to 6 mm, giving you 167x to 200x, a good magnification for planets. If the short eye relief is a problem, either go to a Barlow lens and a 10 to 12 mm eyepiece, or look at the Orion Stratus series, which offer excellent qulaitity, wide field of view, and long eye relief. Be sure to get a decent Barlow, like the Orion Shorty Plus or the Tele Vue, as the cheaper Barlows are junk.
You might want to buy used eyepieces.
You can usually find them at http://www.astromart.com in the classifeds.
That would also be a good place to ask opinions on different equipment.
The best relatively inexpensive eyepieces for image quality are Japanese-made Abbe orthoscopics, available from a number of sources – http://www.universityoptics.com/125inch.… . Their eye relief is a little better than Plossls, though not much, and their apparent FOV is less than 45°. Cost is $60 or less each. For a wider (60°) FOV and decent (16mm) eye relief, I like the Burgess/TMB Planetary eyepieces – http://www.burgessoptical.com/EPs/Planet… at $99 each. These have gone on sale at 3 for $200 a couple of times in the past.
If you are buying 1.25″ eyepieces, don’t buy a 40mm. You will get the same field of view in a 32 or 35mm Plossl. The 32mm TeleVue Plossl and the 30mm Orion Ultrascopic are excellent in this size, though slightly over $100. I highly recommend buying used eyepieces on Astromart (http://www.astromart.com/ ) . Carefully used eyepieces can be bought for maybe 70% of their new cost and resold for the same if they don’t work out for you.
Waiting for my celestron accesory kit, the 4mm eyepiece is the most expected!!!

well its kind of a two for one. Pick something your really interested in. I had to do this for college and I picked the mag lev trains of europe and asia. I went to college for EE and this was perfect for me. I learned as much as I could about them, from how many inches off the ground they levitate to how fast they go to the fail safe measures taken in case of a power outage. Try not reading two fast through your material, pause for q and a. Remember no one is going to read your speech but you so write it so you can remember it without staring down at the paper the whole time.

This is completely normal for a Newtonian reflector telescope…in fact it indicates that your telescope is properly collimated (aligned).
Actually, you should only see a reflection of your own eye when you look into the eyepiece holder without an eyepiece in it. It should look like this:

Something like this perhaps?
as is routinely pointed out, there is no one "best" telescope.
i have three "best" telescopes, which are best for particular purposes. one is highly portable, and i can set it up and be observing in about 90 seconds. the second has extremely high optical quality, and i can take pictures with it. the third is huge (i need a stepladder to reach the eyepiece), and while i can only use it a handful of times a year, each session is memorable.
do your homework with books like nightwatch and the backyard astronomers guide. visit your local astronomy club. only buy from a telescope store.
While the Hubble space telescope has provided the world with some of the most amazing images ever taken of the very edge of our universe, it has now revealed details of something much closer. The newest images, set to appear in the March issue of the Astronomical Journal, are of everybody’s favorite ex-planet—now dwarf planet—Pluto. The images reveal an “icy and dark molasses-colored, mottled world that is undergoing seasonal changes in its surface color and brightness.” The changes in color are believed to be the result of seasonal variations where surface ice sublimes from one pole and migrates to the other. This transformation occurred over a short, two-year period from 2000 to 2002—that’s less than one percent of the total orbital period/seasonal cycle of Pluto. These photos are the sharpest and clearest pictures taken of the planet to date, and will remain so until NASA’s New Horizon spacecraft comes within six months of this distant object—something that won’t occur until 2015….
Although other planets have rings too, Saturn's rings are the only ones that are visible from Earth even with a small telescope.

I would like to suggest you join an astronomy club the people you meet will be very helpful.
You probably got the 25mm and 10mm eyepieces-start with the 25mm in the day( DONT LOOK AT THE SUN)find an object at least 1/4 mile away (I use a power line tower) and center it in your field of view, then adjust your finder so the object is centered in it.Be sure its still centered in the eyepiece then switch to the 10mm.Now you will see the difference in eyepieces and your finder will be lined up.
You will also need to collimate this telescope, here is good instruction on that-

New York – Gov. David Paterson is suspending hundreds of current and new construction projects paid for with state funds because of New York’s fiscal crisis and the lack of a 2010-11 budget.
Advertisement:
Paterson administration officials tell The Associated Press that all projects not paid for by federal economic stimulus funds will be delayed until the Legislature and the governor agree on a budget or emergency funding. The extraordinary order also tells contractors on existing projects that the state won’t fund any work after the start of the new fiscal year on Thursday until there’s a budget or emergency funds. The order exempts projects that are planned to address “emergency health and safety needs” as certified by the Division of Budget.
