Hi. You can make a pretty heavy duty one from the metal patches used by opthalmic surgeons. They are perforated and you can see right through them.
The focal length is an important factor. It would never work, because monoculars are not designed to focus on such a short length. I don't know why you'd be unhappy with 7 power for astronomy, however. Most astronomical objects that you can't see with extreme magnification are seen with light-gathering instead.

I believe your eypeice may be missing the part which actually inserts into the tube. It's not uncommon for the eyepiece tubes to have an inner diamter of 1.25" and an outer diamter of 1.375". Having an eypeice with a maximum diamter of 1.375 with a smaller diamter portion of 1.25" fitting into the tube ensures that the eyepeice won't slide into places it doesn't belong if the locking mechanism fails on some types of telescopes.
